Journal Quilts 2011
These journal quilts were made every month for a year as part of a challenge set by the Contemporary Quilt Group of the British Isles as a platform to experiment and try out techniques and ideas. The 2011 pieces stipulated a size of 10 inches square and three themes, circles, text and buttons. Each piece reflected an aspect of my life at the time.
'Old Bag' – clearing up after Christmas I found a paper bag which I used to print from and a basis for the design.
'Tree of Life' – I returned from a short but inspiring trip to India looking at textiles and used the Tree of Life image and lots of hand stitching.
'Nine Trees' – recycled gold foil chocolate wrappers and khadi paper brought back from India were incorporated in the design. The smell lingered for quite a while.
'Stone Saturated' – I was trying out digital printing on to different media, in this case transparent non-woven fabric.
'Flying the Nest' – started as a paper collage of scraps from a bin, resurrected and scanned and digitally printed and stitched.
'Man/Woman' – for years a funny little drawing has been pinned near my desk. I altered, scanned and printed the image onto re- cycled sheeting then machine stitched it to death.
'With a Little Help From my Friends' – I asked a group of friends to send me a button and a quotation – wise words for the New Year. Little pockets have buttons stitched on them with the quotation inside.
